General Description:

The Groundskeeper – Irrigation Specialist is responsible for maintaining University grounds to provide a safe environment for University students, staff, and visitors. Maintains and installs landscaped areas, trees, turf, paved surfaces, and ponds. Also responsible for the troubleshooting and repair of irrigation systems. Assists in directing staff and student employees in irrigation maintenance, operation, installation, and repair. Reports to the Campus Landscape and Athletic Fields Manager.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

-Inspect and monitor University grounds areas to determine levels of maintenance required.
-Perform grounds maintenance tasks using industry recognized practices and procedures.
-Direct and coordinate Groundskeepers and 1-4 work-study students on irrigation projects.
-Implement integrated pest management methods to control pests.
-Install, modify, repair, maintain and test irrigation systems.
-Perform minor repairs/tune-ups to hand tools and powered hand and riding equipment.
-Operate and maintain all equipment in accordance with state and federal regulations.
-Assist with special event activities or emergency situations as directed.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

-Knowledge of hydraulic principles and ability to troubleshoot common irrigation issues.
-Understands how to design, layout, install and maintain irrigation systems.
-Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions related to grounds maintenance.
-Working knowledge of horticultural practices, procedures, and methods.
-Ability to carry out written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision.
-Ability to set project priorities, prepare reports, and keep maintenance/inventory records.
-Operate hand/power tools, automobiles, tractors, brush chippers, aerators, mowers, etc.
-Ability to identify plant and turf pests and recommend an appropriate remedy.
-Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and under pressure.

Required Qualifications:

1. Two years grounds maintenance experience, including experience in turf maintenance.
2. High School Diploma or GED.
3. Valid WA Commercial Pesticide Applicators’ License or ability to obtain within one year.
4. Valid Driver’s License (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2yrs).
5. Finalist candidates must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, physical exam and drug screen (including marijuana), pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training; and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5yr Employment Abstract).

Preferred Qualifications:

-Supervisory experience.
-Certified Irrigation Technician or equivalent.

Work Conditions:

-Work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended period of time in environment containing dust, odors, and high level of noise (>85dB).
-Work while bending and stooping for extended periods, as well as from above ground areas such as ladders, aerial platforms and/or scaffolds.

Physical Requirements:

-Safely lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs 30 times each work shift; exert physical force in excess of 50 to 100 lbs for 30% of each work shift.
-Safely carry 40 lb backpack continuously for two hours each work shift.
-Operate equipment involving dexterous use of both hands and feet simultaneously.
