Full-time, tenure-track position available beginning June 1, 2018. 12 month position; Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week.

General Description:

Mortvedt Library at Pacific Lutheran University invites applications for a tenure-track librarian at the level of Assistant Professor to begin June 1, 2018. The Library is seeking an energetic and innovative Instruction and Reference Librarian to participate in our information literacy program and campus outreach, work collaboratively on digital library initiatives, service improvements, collection development, and provide stellar reference service. Librarians at Pacific Lutheran University hold faculty rank and are expected to participate in university governance and service, as well as pursue an active research agenda. The librarian is expected to work as a peer with faculty, and to develop collegial relationships with faculty and others via research assistance and committee work.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

-Participate in library’s information literacy program, with the potential to teach a credit-bearing course, under the leadership of the instruction coordinator.
-Actively develop the library collection in several subject areas, in collaboration with librarian colleagues and departmental faculty liaisons.
-Collaborate with other librarians in ongoing strategic planning for digital collections and services, including, but not limited to: online journals, e-books, online reference tools, and data sources.
-Work closely with faculty to integrate information literacy skills into coursework.
-Provide general and specialized reference service in traditional and digital environments, including chat reference.
-Present, publish, or otherwise contribute to the library profession.
-Serve as active participant in campus life.
-Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The successful candidate will demonstrate most, if not all, of the following skills and abilities:
-Enthusiasm for teaching and experience with information literacy instruction.
-An outgoing, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit.
-Ability to work both collegially in a library setting and independently in various departments and other locations on campus.
-Demonstrated knowledge and experience with online research resources, course management systems, and content management systems.

Required Qualifications:

-ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent in library and information science. Candidates currently enrolled in an LIS program will be considered, but degree must be in hand by June 1, 2018.
-Instruction and reference experience in an academic library. Teaching experience in other academic or library settings would be considered as a substitute for this requirement.
-Have a dynamic and engaging teaching style, with demonstrable pedagogical skill and an interest in innovative teaching methods.
-Broad familiarity with research methods in major disciplines.
-Provide a leadership role on collaborative library projects as needed.
-Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse student populations.
-Commitment to professional development and service.
-Applicant must have the ability to, after receiving an offer of or after starting employment, provide proof of US Citizenship or a current valid visa to work in this country, without any support from PLU.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience teaching in a course-integrated library instruction program, and/or credit-bearing term-length information literacy courses.
-Experience or knowledge of library technologies, instructional design, institutional repositories, and/or managing social media communication.
-Subject expertise in one or more of the following areas: religion, history, English, and/or business.
-Demonstrated experience or interest in online instructional design, and/or familiarity with design tools.
